In recent years, the emergence, growth and importance of parliaments have contributed to a more democratic discourse and development on the African continent.
The Parliamentary Centre’s Africa Program is by far our largest. Since 1999, the Parliamentary Centre has worked with over 31 African Parliaments, implementing almost 50 projects that are as diverse as the continent itself. Our support has focused on strengthening committee oversight and lawmaking; supporting regional inter-parliamentary networks; building the capacity of parliamentary secretariats; supporting legislative development at the state, provincial and the national levels; developing parliamentary performance planning and reporting systems, among other things. The Centre has also developed a significant expertise in the area of budget oversight through the establishment of its Budget Advisory Unit.
